A first work, chosen slowly
A few practical questions that make buying your first piece less intimidating.
HomeAbout Oriel

We believe a gallery can be serious about art and easy to enter. Oriel brings together six independent artists working in painting, drawing, print, stone and glass. Their materials differ; their attention to making is what connects them.
A visit can begin with a question or with silence. Our hosts offer practical information about scale, materials and care, and leave space for your own response. You do not need to be buying a work to spend time here.
Meet the galleryStories from our own journal offer a starting point, whether you are visiting for the first time or thinking about a work for your home.

A few practical questions that make buying your first piece less intimidating.

Why surface, margins and a careful frame matter when you look at a drawing.

A plinth, a shadow and a path through the room are all part of seeing a form.
There was no pressure to choose quickly. We looked at three very different works, talked about the light in our room and took time to see each one from across the gallery. The host explained the materials and framing options clearly, then sent us away with enough information to think. A week later we came back knowing which image had stayed with us.
