Elena Ward

Painter & mixed-media artist

“I look for the moment when a mark becomes enough.”

Studio practice

Elena works between landscape and the human figure, using mineral pigments, linen and small pieces of found paper. Her studio practice is slow and physical: paint is laid down, removed and laid down again until a surface holds both a clear gesture and the trace of its making.

At Oriel

Her recent series considers pauses rather than places. A seated figure, a bend of water or the edge of a shadow can become the starting point for a painting that leaves room for the viewer’s own memory. At Oriel she presents paintings and small works on board.
